Oil, Profits and Peace: Does Business Have a Role in Peacemaking?

Jill Shankelman

In her book Jill Shankelman examines the political economy of oil and analyzes the relationship between the industry and violent conflict.  Through several case studies, the ways in which companies operating in such zones can reduce the risk of conflict are highlighted, as are the changing notions and forms of corporate social responsibility that can shape their operations. The author posits that governments often have real choice over which companies they allow to operate, meaning that Western oil companies, facing strong competition, have less leverage to dictate terms, be it financial or governance related.

- Do you agree with this analysis and what kinds of demands should governments be placing on oil companies?

- How does this change when the government is weak or failing, and what are the implications for the international donor community?
